Tips for a neat result

  • Work in good light. Shadows hide uneven marks.
  • Keep a seam ripper within reach during the whole job, so that a bad stitch line comes out the moment you notice it.
  • Photograph the garment before you start, so you can compare the finished result.

Common mistakes and fixes

The garment came out shorter after washing.

The fabric shrank after the hem was set. Wash and dry before measuring, using the same method you will use in future.

The hem is level at the mirror but uneven when I walk.

You marked while standing with weight on one leg. Stand with weight even on both feet, or ask a helper to check from the back.

Check your result

  • Every item is ticked off, in order, before any permanent stitching.
  • You did not cut any fabric until the basted fit was confirmed.
