Choosing a Needle and Preparing Floss
Why cross-stitch uses a blunt needle, which size fits which fabric, and how to separate floss.
The needle
Cross-stitch uses a tapestry needle. It has a blunt, rounded tip that slides into the holes of the fabric without splitting the threads, and a long eye for stranded floss. The needle should pass through a hole without forcing it wider. Size 24 fits 14-count Aida. Size 26 fits 16 and 18-count. A higher number is a finer needle.
The thread
Use six-strand cotton embroidery floss and separate it. On 14-count Aida, stitch with 2 strands. Backstitch outlines usually use 1 strand.

Tips for a neat result
- Chart keys give floss colours by brand number, such as DMC 321. Take the number to the shop instead of trying to match by eye.
- Keep each colour on a labelled card bobbin.
