Reinforcing a Seam

Strengthening a weak or stressed seam with a second line of stitches. This helps with seams that keep splitting.

What you will learn

  • Backstitching over a seam
  • Strengthening a weak area

Materials and tools

Before you start

  • Turn the garment inside out. Inspect the seam, and mark the weak section with chalk, extending 1 in (25 mm) beyond each end.
  • Knot the thread.

Step by step

  1. 1,423,65,87
Backstitch beside the original seam. Every stitch overlaps the one before.
  2. 12345678
A second row of running stitch in the seam allowance, parallel to the backstitch row.

Tips for a neat result

  • Use polyester thread, not cotton, which is weaker.
  • Match thread to the seam colour or use a neutral shade, since reinforcement is on the inside.
  • If the fabric near the seam is worn, add a patch before reinforcing.

Common mistakes and fixes

The new stitches pull the fabric.

The thread was too tight. Ease the tension until the fabric lies flat.

The seam splits next to the new row.

The fabric is worn. Add a patch or ask a professional to repair it.

Stitches show on the front.

The needle went through to the right side. Keep the stitches in the seam allowance.

Check your result

  • The seam is firm and resists a gentle tug.
  • No new stitches show on the right side.
Practice exerciseSew a seam with 1/4 in (6 mm) running stitch on two scraps, then reinforce it with backstitch. Pull both seams apart gently and compare.
