Replace Basic Elastic
Remove old, stretched elastic from a waistband casing and thread through new elastic using a safety pin or a bodkin (a blunt tool for threading elastic).
What you will learn
- Threading elastic through a casing
- Sizing new elastic
- Joining elastic ends
Materials and tools
Before you start
- Measure around your waist. Measure the old elastic width, which is often 3/4 to 1 1/2 in (2 to 4 cm).
Step by step
Tips for a neat result
- A bodkin is a flat, blunt needle with a large eye, made for threading elastic. It will not snag the casing as a safety pin sometimes does.
- Sew a few stitches through the casing and elastic at each side seam, to stop the elastic twisting.
Common mistakes and fixes
The elastic disappeared inside the casing.
You let go of the tail. Pin the tail to the garment before threading.
The elastic rolls and twists.
It is too narrow for the casing, or it twisted during threading. Re-thread flat, and sew a few stitches through the casing and elastic along each side seam line to hold it.
Check your result
- The waistband sits comfortably, with no rolling or twisting.
- The elastic can be pulled over your hips without strain.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor if the casing is stitched in channels, lined, or part of a fitted waistband that is difficult to open.
