Step by step
Tips for a neat result
- A tape bodkin is easier to push through a long casing than a safety pin.
- For children's garments, avoid long drawstrings near the neck. Use a short cord or an elastic alternative.
Common mistakes and fixes
The cord disappeared inside.
The tail was released. Pin it to the garment before threading.
The cord snags in the casing.
It is too thick, or the casing is twisted. Use a thinner cord and flatten the casing.
Safety and fabric care
- Drawstrings at the neck of children's clothing are a strangulation risk. Do not add them. Handle flame and hot synthetic cord with care.
Check your result
- The cord slides freely and the garment can be tightened and loosened.
- Both ends are knotted or finished.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor if the casing is torn or closed and needs reopening on a lined garment.
