Reinforce Pockets
Strengthen a pocket that is splitting at a corner or pulling away, so it stops tearing further.
What you will learn
- Finding weak points
- Reinforcing with backstitch
- Making a bar tack
Materials and tools
Before you start
- Turn the pocket inside out and examine it. Check the corners where it joins the garment.
Step by step
A bar tack is a short band of tight parallel stitches at a stress point.
Tips for a neat result
- Reinforce before there is a hole. A worn pocket corner can be strengthened in minutes.
- Do not overfill pockets with heavy objects like phones and keys.
Common mistakes and fixes
The pocket tore again beside the repair.
The fabric next to the stitching is weak. Sew a patch behind it, and extend the stitching into stronger fabric.
The repair looks bulky.
Too many layers of thread. Use fine thread and keep the stitching narrow.
Check your result
- The pocket holds objects without pulling at the corners.
- The stitching is firm and flat.
Stop it happening againReinforce the top corners of new patch pockets with a small triangle or bar tack, and keep heavy objects out of thin pockets.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor if the pocket bag has a large hole, if the pocket is welted, or if it is part of tailored trousers or a jacket.
