Tips for a neat result

  • Use a thread slightly darker than the fabric, because thread looks lighter in a seam.
  • Press the fold well before sewing. A crisp fold hides the stitches.

Common mistakes and fixes

Dimples show on the front.

The thread was pulled too tight or the needle caught too many threads. Leave slack between stitches and catch only one or two threads.

The hem has come undone.

The stitches are too far apart or too loose at the ends. Space stitches 1/4 in (6 mm) apart and fasten the thread securely.

Check your result

  • No stitches are visible on the outside.
  • The hem lies flat and hangs evenly.
Practice exercisePractise on a scrap of cotton folded in a 1 in (2.5 cm) hem. Aim for 20 stitches where nothing shows on the front.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor for delicate, very fine or slippery fabric where stitch marks are hard to prevent.
