Take In Side Seams on a Skirt or Dress
Make a simple skirt or dress smaller by sewing new, deeper side seams inside the old ones.
What you will learn
- Pinning a new seam on the body
- Tapering a seam
- Basting then sewing
Materials and tools
Before you start
- Put the garment on inside out. A helper pinches and pins the excess fabric at each side seam.
Step by step
Tips for a neat result
- Never take in more than the garment's ease allows. Keep at least 1 in (2.5 cm) of ease at the hips.
- Taper the line, so there is no sudden step at the end of the seam.
Common mistakes and fixes
The seam shows a bump at the end.
The taper ended too abruptly. Redo the line so it joins the old seam gradually over 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm).
The side seams swing forward.
The amount removed from the front and back was unequal. Divide the change evenly, unless the fit calls for something different.
Check your result
- The garment fits smoothly with no drag lines.
- Both sides match and the side seams hang straight.
- You can sit and move comfortably.
When to use a professionalTake the garment to a tailor if it is lined, has a side zip, pockets in the seam, or a pattern that must line up across the seams.
