Step by step
Tips for a neat result
- If your thread twists as you sew, let the needle dangle at the end of the thread so it spins and untwists.
- Run cotton or polyester thread through a block of beeswax or thread conditioner to reduce tangles.
- Cut a few lengths at once and park the threaded needles in a pin cushion.
Common mistakes and fixes
The thread keeps knotting in the middle of a seam.
The piece is too long or the thread is twisting. Cut it shorter and let the needle dangle now and then to untwist it.
A doubled thread tangles badly.
The two strands twist apart. Knot the ends together, and run the thread through beeswax before you start.
The thread runs out in the middle of a stitch.
Stop sewing when about 4 in (10 cm) is left. Finish with a knot and rethread.
Check your result
- The thread reaches comfortably from the fabric to your elbow.
- A doubled thread has two matching ends knotted together.
