  • Using a brush safely
  • Following the oiling rule in the manual

Materials and tools

Before you start

  • Switch off and unplug the machine. Remove the needle and presser foot. Remove the bobbin. Take out the bobbin case only if your manual allows; on many drop-in machines the needle plate comes off first.

Tips for a neat result

  • Clean after every big project, or after every 8 to 10 hours of sewing.
  • Fabrics such as fleece and flannel produce more lint.

Common mistakes and fixes

Oil stains on the fabric.

Too much oil, or oil used on a model that does not need it. Wipe off excess and sew scrap until clean.

The needle plate will not go back on.

A screw is crossed or lint is under it. Remove and refit slowly.

Lint returns very quickly.

The needle plate area may be full of lint that cannot be reached. Have the machine serviced.

Safety and fabric care
  • Switch off and unplug before cleaning.
  • Do not use canned air unless the manual allows it. Do not oil parts the manual does not list.

Check your result

  • No lint is visible around the feed dogs or in the bobbin area.
  • The machine runs smoothly and quietly.
When to use a professionalIf the machine is noisy, stiff or has timing problems, have it serviced by a repair shop. Do not take apart sealed parts.
