Tips for a neat result
- Write the settings for your usual sewing on a note kept with the machine: stitch, length and tension.
- If your machine has several needle positions, keep it centered for now.
Common mistakes and fixes
The stitches look like zigzags.
The stitch width is not at zero or a zigzag stitch is selected. Reset the selector.
The needle hits the foot and snaps.
A straight-stitch foot was used with the needle off center or with a zigzag selected, or the stitch width is too wide for the foot. Turn the handwheel by hand to check clearance before sewing.
Safety and fabric care
- Turn the handwheel by hand once after changing the stitch or foot, to check the needle clears the foot and plate.
Check your result
- A short line sewn on scrap is straight, with even stitches.
- You know which setting is straight stitch on your machine.
