Tips for a neat result

  • Longer stitches are easier to unpick. Use them when you are unsure of the fit.
  • Thick fabric needs longer stitches. Fine fabric needs shorter ones.

Common mistakes and fixes

The fabric puckers along the seam.

The stitches may be too short for the fabric. Lengthen to 2.5 mm or 3 mm.

The seam pulls apart easily.

Stitches may be too long. Shorten to 2.5 mm for seams that carry weight.

Stitches look uneven in length.

The fabric is being pulled or pushed by hand, or the feed dogs are lowered. Let the machine feed the fabric.

Check your result

  • You can set 2.5 mm and see about 10 stitches per inch.
  • You know which length suits basting, seams and topstitching.
