Topstitching
A visible line of stitching on the right side of the fabric that holds seams flat and adds a finished look.
What you will learn
- Setting a longer stitch
- Following a guide for even spacing
- Stitching slowly in a straight line
Materials and tools
Before you start
- Sew a seam, press it, and press the allowances to one side. Topstitching will go on the right side.
Step by step
Tips for a neat result
- Test the stitch length and thread on a scrap before starting.
- Slow, even speed keeps topstitching straight.
Common mistakes and fixes
The line wobbles.
You watched the needle. Watch the guide, and slow down.
Stitches look uneven or loop.
The thread is thicker than the needle eye allows, or the tension needs a slight adjustment. Use a larger needle and test.
The fabric puckers.
The stitch is too short or fabric was pulled. Lengthen to 3.5 mm.
Check your result
- The topstitching is straight and the same distance from the edge throughout.
- The stitches are even in length and the thread ends are hidden.
