Hooks, Eyes and Snaps

How to sew on hook and eye closures and snap fasteners so they stay put and the stitches stay hidden.

What you will learn

  • Placing fasteners
  • Sewing through metal loops
  • Keeping stitches hidden

Materials and tools

Before you start

  • Mark the position of the hook and the eye with chalk. Overlap the edges first and check where they meet.
  • Double the thread and knot the ends.

Step by step

  1. 1,32,456
Stitches over the ring. The needle comes up beside the ring, loops over it and goes down through the fabric.
  2. 1,32,456
The eye is sewn with the same ring stitches. A round loop eye sticks out slightly so the hook can catch it.

Tips for a neat result

  • Use strong thread so the closure does not pull off.
  • Take stitches only through the inside layer so nothing shows on the right side.
  • Place snaps so that they do not gap when the garment is worn.

Common mistakes and fixes

The closure gapes or pops open.

The position is wrong. Check the overlap and move the fasteners closer together.

Stitches show on the right side.

The needle went through all layers. Pick up only the inner layer of fabric.

The hook lifts off the fabric.

The bend was not stitched down. Sew 2 or 3 stitches over the bend.

Check your result

  • The hook and eye fasten and release smoothly.
  • No stitches show on the right side.
