Secure a Loose Lining

Reattach a lining that has come away from the hem of a jacket, skirt or coat. A beginner can do this when the lining fabric is sound. Torn linings and linings sewn into sleeves or collars need more advanced technique.

Slip stitch joins the folded lining to the flat hem allowance. Thread travels in the fold, with a tiny catch in the hem allowance.

Tips for a neat result

  • Leave 1 in (25 mm) of lining above the hem.
  • Do not sew through to the right side of the garment.
  • Keep the stitches loose.

Common mistakes and fixes

The lining pulls the hem.

The lining is too short or the stitches too tight. Release the stitches and leave more ease.

Stitches show on the outside.

The needle went through the outer fabric. Catch only the hem allowance.

The lining hangs below the hem.

It is too long. Fold up the extra and press, or trim.

Check your result

  • The lining hangs smoothly, about 1 in (25 mm) above the outer hem.
  • The outer fabric shows no stitches or dimples.
When to use a professionalThis is a manageable repair for a confident beginner on a straight hem. Take the garment to a tailor if the lining is torn or shredded, if the lining has come away at the armholes, sleeves or neckline, or if the garment is a tailored coat with a bagged lining.
