Sew a Patch onto a Garment

Attach a fabric patch or badge to a jacket, bag or jeans with whipstitch or blanket stitch. This suits a beginner on cotton or denim. Leather, waterproof fabric and stretchy knits need more advanced technique.

What you will learn

  • Positioning a patch
  • Whipstitch
  • Blanket stitch

Materials and tools

Before you start

  • Press the garment and the patch flat.
  • If the patch is fusible (iron-on), follow the packet instructions, then still sew round the edge so it survives washing.

Step by step

  1. 12345678
Whipstitch round the patch edge with stitches slanting over it.
  2. 12345678
Blanket stitch with the loops along the patch edge.

Tips for a neat result

  • Use thread that matches the patch border.
  • Use a thimble on denim and canvas.
  • Check the patch lies flat before sewing the last side.

Common mistakes and fixes

The patch puckers.

Stitches were too tight. Loosen them and pull only until the thread lies flat.

The patch peels at the corners.

The corners were not secured. Add extra stitches at the corners.

Stitches show on the inside of a sleeve.

The needle went through both layers. Keep the back layer clear.

Check your result

  • The patch lies flat and every edge is secure.
  • Stitches are evenly spaced and the garment has no puckers.
When to use a professionalA beginner can patch cotton, denim and canvas. Use a professional for leather, waterproof or technical fabrics, stretch knits and anything with a fine finish, as the needle holes may be permanent.
