Tips for a neat result
- A tailor's open-topped thimble lets you wear long fingernails.
- Wear the thimble from the start of a session so you do not need to put it on mid-seam.
- Practice on scrap fabric before wearing it on a project.
Common mistakes and fixes
The needle keeps slipping off the thimble.
The needle is hitting the smooth part or a worn thimble. Position the eye end in a dimple and push straight along the needle.
The finger is sore after sewing.
The thimble is too tight or is the wrong size. Choose the next size up.
Needle points still prick the other hand.
The finger underneath has no protection. Wear a second thimble or a leather finger guard on that hand.
Check your result
- The thimble stays on the finger without squeezing it.
- You can push a needle through two layers of denim without hurting your fingers.
